Our feature for this month is a traditionally designed 1990s living room in desperate need of an update — challenge accepted! We maintained the traditional appeal but didn’t hesitate to usher in contemporary elements. With a white color palette to choose from, we went from a mustard yellow to a neutral Pale Oak by Benjamin Moore. Creating just enough brightness to open up the room, this paint color also stands out from the white ceiling finish to enhance more depth … a win-win. We then installed luxurious dark hardwood floors for an ultra-sleek look, providing contrasting harmony and introducing texture throughout the layout.
Captivating and elegant furnishings add sumptuous layers against the backdrop of the balanced paint palette. After all, nothing says glamorous like a tufted velvet sofa and mirrored furniture. We should know — considering this sofa and table are custom designed by us and part of our collection at John McClain Home! Curved side chairs were then brought in to round out the template (pun totally intended).
Who says metal has to be only for fixtures? We incorporated metal artwork by Leftbank Art to give the room a modest edge and integrate different elements found in nature. Organic accents can enliven and freshen up a space — giving you a breath of fresh air! For this design, the John McClain Design team adorned the wall just above the mirrored desk with a minimalist butterfly gallery and topped off the coffee table with an elegant oversized white orchid centerpiece. Hints of gray and brown were used to add the warmth that is customary to every living room. Custom embroidered drapery and a marble fireplace (not pictured) added additional warmth and texture.
Every element from the paint finishes to the accessories were stabilized and counterbalanced by other key pieces in the room to create the polished symmetrical living room you see here. One of our most popular projects, this design is still being preserved by the homeowner today!
Till next time…
Happy Designs!
